Respective captains for the Boys and Girls Junior America’s Cup have announced the junior golfers selected for their respective teams for this year’s events. The Junior America’s Cup will be held July 24-27, 2006 with the Girls competition held at Oro Valley Country Club in Tucson, Ariz., while the Boys will be defending last year’s tie for first place honors at Ogden Country Club in Ogden, Utah.  Last year, three of four Oregon team members shot sub par rounds on the final day of competition at the Powder Horn Golf Club in Sheridan, Wyo. to tie Washington’s team.

The Girls team, announced by co-captains Mary Harrington and Gini Miller of Portland, Ore., will consist of Erica Omlid of Springfield, Ore., Kendra Little of Eugene, Ore., Molly Black of Bend, Ore. and Danielle Ranallo of West Linn, Ore.

Omlid will have an especially busy month of travel. She recently qualified, along with Black, to represent Oregon at the Callaway Junior World competition to be held in San Diego, July 11-14. The following week she will play in the US Girls Junior Amateur at Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, NC followed by her trip to the Junior Girls Americas Cup. Omlid won the finals in her division at the State Junior Match Play title last week over Ranallo. Little is the reigning two-time Junior Stroke Play Champion.

Captain Steve Hagen of Scappoose, Ore. announced the Boys team members are Robbie Ziegler of Canby, Ore., Justin Smithhisler of Roseburg, Ore., Andrew Vijarro of Bend, Ore. and Ty Chambers of Brush Prairie, Wash.

Ziegler’s, the newly crowned State Junior Match Play Champion, will have a hectic schedule similar to Omlid’s. He also recently qualified to represent Oregon at Junior Worlds along with Vijarro, and will play the following week at the US Junior Amateur at Rancho Sante Fe Golf Club in Rancho Sante Fe, Calif. followed by his trip to the Junior Boys Americas Cup. Vijarro is an alternate for the US Junior Amateur. Smithhisler is the only returning member of last year’s victorious team.

The Boys and Girls Junior America’s Cup Matches brings together elite international fields of junior golfers who competed in a 54-hole stroke play team competition with the low three of four scores per team being tallied daily to determine the team total. team format. All told, 18 Girls teams and 17 Boys teams (comprised of four players age 17 and under), will represent 12 western states, 2 Canadian Provinces and Mexico.

Selected based on performance points earned in designated Oregon Junior Golf events. Tournaments receiving points must be OJGA sanctioned events open to all eligible Oregon Junior Golf members and a player must be a member of Oregon Junior Golf at the time of the tournament to receive points.

Oregon Junior Golf Fund, Inc. (OJGF) provides travel expenses for the team. OJGF, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization whose purpose is to promote junior golf through education and amateur competitions for kids of all skill levels 8-17 years of age. Generous donations along with overhead support from the OGA make it possible to administer an extensive junior golf program for over 1,000 youth in Oregon and Southwest Washington.
